Les Halles, the covered market is a nineteenth-century iron and glass structure. The alleyways inside are full of atmosphere; noise and bustle and tempting smells of mouth-watering French food. There were, until 1940, no less than 49 breweries in Limoges; real ale is still brewed there., in the Brasserie St Martial, Place Denis-Dussoubs.
The impressive Gare des Benedictins railway station was built at the beginning of the last century with a magnificent dome in slate, engraved glass, copper, wrought iron and other materials. It was built on land that was once a Benedictines convent, hence, Gare des Benedictins. The inside of the station shows stained glass windows that bear numerous Limousin symbols.
The Cathedral was built during the 13th - 16th centuries, it reminded me of Chartres with its many stained glass windows and flying buttresses. This masterpiece of gothic art, is one of the few gothic style monuments of Southern France. It took 600 years to build it.
Limoges has become the generic name for the hard paste porcelain that was produced during the 18th, 19th, and into the 20th century in Limoges. It’s considered the finest hard paste porcelain in the world because of three very distinct characteristics. The ingredients, the firing process and the skilled artisans.
