.............A real taste of rural France
Our nearest skiing is clermont ferrand about 2 hours away. Close enough for an early set off, a day on the slopes and then back for a hot meal.
The Auvergne is home to the 'Monts Dome', a range of mountains located to the south west of Clermont Ferrand, made up of over 80 volcanoes which became extinct less than 4000 years ago. This stunning terrain has several high peaks (known as Puys) with the imposing Puy de Dome overlooking Clermont Ferrand reaching 1465m and the Puy de Sancy an impressive 1886m, the highest peak in France outside of the Alps and Pyrenees.
Yes..;you can ski down the volcano.
With Log burners and central heating, Grandmont is the perfect place for a winter break. The days are normally blue skies but cold. The temperature starts ging down from November onwards, although October and November are usually still hot enough for swimming, and with the heated pool there is no excuse.
From November onwards winter arrives and the fires start getting lit and the smell of the wood burning drifts throughout the village. The birds start to come back to the feeders after all summer in the forests. The silence is amazing. The whole place transforms, the bars and restaurants all have open fires and a local bar at petit coudier has the odd fire in the garden to sit around as well.
All the gites have log burners and wood can be provided so after a days walking or visiting the nearby sights you can relax by the fire. There is also central heating should the nights get cold.
Horse riding usually involves getting wrapped up and taking flasks of mulled wine for the journey. Horseshoe gite is equipped with a corner bath and plenty of hot water.
